Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
