Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
