The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
