The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Uncovering His Best Role
It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
